3 SNIP 2003 Data Analysis

3.1 BACKGROUND: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE QUALIFIED NURSING AND MIDWIFERY WORKFORCE IN SCOTLAND

This section summarises the main characteristics of the qualified nursing and midwifery workforce in Scotland.

1. The number of qualified nurses and midwives that were directly and permanently employed by NHSScotland increased from 43,511 at 30 September 2002, to 44,689 at 30 September 2003, an increase of 2.7%.*

2. The workforce outlined above is ageing. In 1990, 32.3% of the workforce were aged less than 30 compared to 13.1% in 2003. In contrast, 29.8% of staff were aged
30-39 in 1990 compared to 33.6% in 2003. The percentage aged 55 or over has fluctuated over the time period but at 7.5% in 2003, is only slightly higher than the figure of 7.2% in 1990.*

3. The grade mix of the nursing and midwifery workforce including unqualified staff has changed slightly over the period 1990-2003. In 1990, 65.8% of the workforce was made up of first- and second-level qualified nurses. In 2003, this was 69.5%.*

4. The proportion of nurses and midwives employed on part-time contracts has increased from 36.2% in 1990 to 39.7% in 2003. The proportion of male staff has remained constant at 9-10%.

5. The nursing and midwifery workforce consists of staff working in a number of sectors including:

  • NHS Trusts/Boards
  • General practice
  • Private hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Prison service
  • Blood Transfusion
  • Non-NHS Occupational Health
