Consensus Workshop - 25 March 2004
The Framework for Nursing in General Practice Consensus Conference
took place on 25 March 2004 at the Edinburgh Hilton Airport
Hotel, Edinburgh.
The day was designed to give all participants a chance to
hear the background of the new GMS Contract and how it will
influence their role. It was also an opportunity to find out
about what work had been done on the new Framework and share
ideas on where Practice Nursing might be in the future. More
important it gave Practice Nurses the opportunity to come
together and discuss issues that they have with their role.
16 Workshops were held in total on the day and allowed all
participants to influence how the framework should look and
what should be included. This built on the work of the National
Focus Groups.
The presentations from the day are available below by clicking
the appropriate link. The outcomes from the workshops are
also available. If you have any comments, ideas, or examples
of good practice, please do not hesitate to put them on the
Message Board, which can be accessed by clicking discussion
forum on the navigation bar.

Outcomes
Communicating directly with Practice Nurses will be crucial
to informing the development of the framework and presents
a major challenge. A national network of Practice Nurse Staff
is currently under construction and includes lead health care
professionals with a remit for cascading information to all
staff at a local level.
Links are being established to other national and local
developments. Including the Agenda for Change agreement. Implementation
of the agreement for NHS employed staff will create an expectation
from practice employed nurses that their knowledge and skills
will be similarly rewarded.
Work will commence in the near future on the core competency
domains of the knowledge and skills framework in terms of
relevance and significance to nursing in general practice.
Work undertaken will help to inform the development of appropriate
Practice Nurse core and specialist competencies particularly
in relation to new and advanced Practice Nurse roles
It is important that the framework is valued by practices
and practice nurses. In order to promote ownership and inform
the framework several focus groups will be held across the
country. The purpose of the groups is to establish the view
representative of Practice Nurses nation wide. The forums
will provide practice nurses with an opportunity to share
ideas and evidence of good practice. It is envisaged that
groups will take place in the new year.
Links are currently being made to the national Community
Nursing Network (CNN).This link will be used to as a focal
point for consultation and widen the scope of communication
to include other relevant professional interests.
On this page will appear current discussion papers around
aspects of the framework development. Views and comments on
issues raised in these papers are sought NursinginGeneralPractice@scotland.gsi.gov.uk
