NHSScotland and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995

Introduction

Welcome to the NHSScotland DDA website.

Disabled people often face unacceptable difficulties when they try to use NHSScotland services. These can be caused by a variety of factors, including the lack of understanding of disability by some staff and by poor physical access to buildings and environments. These may make it difficult or, at worst, impossible for disabled people to access the services they are entitled to, find their way around a premises and communicate with staff.

The purpose of this site is to help facilitate an improvement in the quality of service provided by managers and staff within NHSScotland. A comprehensive approach to access, including awareness and physical access benefits everyone. It helps to create an inclusive environment that supports all NHS employees, patients and visitors. This principle also covers disabled people's access to the entire range of health services and helps eliminate discrimination against people with disabilities by striving to assist NHSScotland in providing 'services for all'.

This site introduces work being done by the Scottish Executive Health Department and partners. These include the Disability Rights Commission, Capability Scotland, Scottish Disability Equality Forum, Scottish Human Services, Health Facilities Scotland and NHS Boards.

This site is also intended to help facilitate compliance by NHSScotland with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and improve the service that NHSScotland provides to disabled people. It does not provide solutions to all the problems faced by NHSScotland as employers and providers of services but is intended to enable you to ask the right questions and know where help can be found.
