Good Practice Event - 'Balanced Working Lives' - 1 October
2003
The Balanced Working Lives Conference., held in Dunblane,
was attended by over 60 delegates from numerous backgrounds
including nursing, human resources and trade unions. The event
started with a researcher from the Work Foundation who recently
published a report on work life balance and flexibility. This
allowed the issue of flexibility within nursing to be set
within a wider context.
David Benton, Director of Nursing, NHS Grampian, then described
the process adopted in Grampian. This was followed by Ann
McPherson with a discussion on partnership from an HR perspective.
There were two opportunities within the event for people to
go into workshop sessions. These ranged from looking at the
different approaches taken to flexibility in England to an
opportunity to look at a system to support and develop managers
in flexible working practices.
The evaluation received so far has been very positive and
a booklet will be produced on good working practice in early
November 2003. Discussions with the HR forum are ongoing on
agreeing next steps.
New Nursing Roles - Deciding the Future for Scotland
17th & 18th November 2003 Royal College of Physicians
of Edinburgh
In December 2001, the Minister for Health and Community Care
established Facing the Future to look at recruitment and retention
issues for nursing and midwifery in Scotland. One national
and 6 local conventions were hosted around Scotland and new
nursing roles emerged as one of 8 key themes. The Facing the
Future group have agreed that the best way to approach this
issue would be to host a Consensus Conference.
This is your chance to speak up. This conference will only
work if delegates come prepared to engage, question, challenge
and work towards a consensus. Delegates must also come for
both days of the conference as it is important that all the
sessions and supporting evidence are reviewed. Nurses often
say they are not involved in policy and decision making -
this is your chance to contribute to modern nursing in Scotland
(on this occasion midwifery is not for consideration specifically
although some of the general themes may apply).
